About Ailsa Craig

Ailsa Craig is an increasingly popular island for boat trips and best accessed from the town of Girvan. Traditionally known as Paddys Milestone ( a half way stop off point for sailors travelling from Belfast to Glasgow ) Ailsa Craig is 99 hectares (240 acres), 1,114 feet high and is approximately 8 miles, or a 45 minute boat trip from Girvan.

Historically the island ( or rock ) was used for mining and before the lighthouse was automated, there would have been up to 29 people living on the island throughout the summer months. Mining of the granite for curling stones still takes place but is on a much smaller scale theses days.

Ailsa Craig is an official RSPB nature reserve. During the summer months there may be anything up to 70,000 birds nesting on the rock and cliffs. Typically you could expect to see gannets, guillemots, puffins, razorbill's, kittiwakes and herring gulls.

Wildlife is best viwed from the water where as well as the many seabirds, seals are often seen basking on the shoreline.

Walking on the rock is permitted however strict rules must be adhered to regarding wildlife, footpaths etc . The general rule here is to look only,  leave nothing behind and take with you wonderful memories.
